    • Popular Grapes
      • Cabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon is the one of the most recognised  grape varieties in the world – and is probably most associated with Bordeaux. It is the main grape variety for chateaux on the Left Bank of Bordeaux, for example with the rockstar wines of Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateau Mouton Rothschild and Chateau Pontet Canet.
      • MerlotA dark-blue coloured grape variety, Merlot originates from France and the name is thought to be a diminutive of Merle, the French name for blackbird.  It is used for varietal wines and as a blending grape. The Merlot grape is now cultivated in both old and new world vineyards and is an incredibly well-known grape variety, probably most famous for being the main grape variety on the Right Bank of Bordeaux in France. Pomerol and Saint Emilion are two of the most prestigious appellations in the world of wine. Discover our collection and buy Merlot wines and blends here, all bottles are available with personalised gift notes upon request.
      • SyrahSyrah, also know as Shiraz in the Southern Hemisphere is one of the most brilliant and interesting varietals. Synonymous with the wines of Northern Rhone in France, making famous wines such as Saint Joseph and Cote Rotie. It is a blending grape variety in the Southern Rhone to, in the GSM blends of Cotes du Rhone. In Australia, the Shiraz wines are very highly regarded as well.
      • ChardonnayChardonnay is the King of the white wine grape varietals – and features all over the world. The most expensive chardonnay exists in Burgundy with wines such as Meursault and Puligny Montrachet, as well as in California where there are some stunning options. It is strongly linked with Champagne – and is the 100% varietal in Blanc de Blanc champagne. You can now find Chardonnay in Spain, South Africa, Italy and Australia as a few examples.
      • Cabernet Franc
      • GrenacheGrenache is one of our favourite grape varieties at Waud Wines – and is typically used in red wine blends. Most famously with Cotes du Rhone, where you get the Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre blend. (GSM). In Spain, where Grenache is known as Garnacha, you can find it in the famous Rioja region. We also love Grenache from Australia, where it is found in the Torbreck wines, that are mimicking wines from the Rhone Valley.
      • TempranilloTempranillo is the main grape variety in the red wines of Rioja. It is a style that most get on with, and also features in other Spanish wine regions including Ribera del Duero, and is regularly used in blends, such as with the Clos Pons wines in Costers del Segre.
      • Pinot NoirBuy Pinot Noir Online Pinot Noir is a classic red grape originating from Burgundy in France. It has been adopted by wine regions all over the world and is considered to be one of the most charismatic of all grape varieties, sensuously fragrant, naturally delicate and charming. Its name was chosen based on the French words for pine and black, as the grapes grow in tightly clustered pinecone-shaped bunches. Explore our collection of Pinot Noir wines carefully sourced from regions right across the globe and order online today.

Wine Education Wednesdays: Cork Taint

Wine Education, Thought PieceBy Kate Palmer7th February 2024

Wine Education Wednesdays: Cork Taint This week we are learning what cork taint is and what it actually means to have a “corked wine” – and no, it is not those small bits of cork that you occasionally find floating in your glass. Corked wines display aromas of wet cardboard, damp, and mould, and generally…

Wine Education Wednesdays: Understanding Wine Labels

Wine Education, Thought PieceBy Kate Palmer31st January 2024

Wine Education Wednesdays: Understanding Wine Labels Firstly, let us explain GIs or ‘geographical indicators’. These are designated vineyard areas within a country and they can vary dramatically in size, covering an entire region (like Bordeaux) or just a single estate (like Bolgheri Sassicaia). In the EU, GIs are split into two categories – Protected Designation of…

Wine Education, Thought PieceBy Kate Palmer24th January 2024

Wine Education Wednesdays: The Phylloxera Outbreak We’ve got an interesting little history lesson for you today – all about how phylloxera, a 19th century vineyard pest, almost wiped out the entire population of European vines. Imagine a world without good wine! In 1866, an aphid known as ‘phylloxera’ was discovered in the vineyards of the…
